Senior Citizens Home, Telč, Bohemia

1st prize in the "Architecture of Humanity" competition announced by the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs.

Built in an apple orchard by a quiet pond, residents of this home for senior citizens can enjoy their golden years in tranquility and beauty. The shape of the building is unique, built as three quarters of a circle, taking advantage of limited space and creating a central atrium which is used for outdoor social gatherings. The home includes 27 studio apartment units, two 2-room units, and 4 wheelchair accessible units. Each unit has a balcony built around the outside of the building. Residents can enjoy the view in complete privacy, or join others in the atrium or in the central meeting room. This room is an area used not only for dining and social gathering of residents, but also for cultural events such as concerts and exhibitions sponsored by the city of Telč. A two-way fireplace warms the room and adds atmosphere in colder weather.
